Connection beyond borders

Young South Asian editorial • A practical perspective

Illustrative culture photograph

A shared region does not mean a shared experience. Approach new conversations with questions about daily life, language, art and the places people call home.

Exchange, rather than explain

Let people describe their own culture. Avoid assuming that one person represents an entire country. Share your own perspective as one experience among many.

Keep the connection going

A book discussion, collaborative playlist or online conversation can turn a first introduction into a lasting exchange. Small, consistent interactions make relationships stronger.

Let exchange be reciprocal

Avoid making one person the permanent teacher or spokesperson. Share the work of choosing topics and preparing materials. Make room for people to talk about ordinary interests as well as cultural traditions.

Notice differences within similarities

Two communities may celebrate similar occasions or face related challenges while interpreting them differently. Curiosity helps you explore those differences without reducing either perspective to a stereotype.

A question to take with you

What have I learned about this particular person, and what am I still tempted to assume about their community?
